Hyssop is native to southern Europe and is a part of the mint family. It has historically been used as a medicinal and magical herb, as well as a food. Hyssop works well both on its own and when combined with other herbs, especially horehound.

Medicinal Uses

Hyssop is used most often for its benefits to the lungs. It is excellent at reducing the inflammation associated with respiratory infections, and it can help to remove excess mucus and asthmatic cough. It is gently relaxing and toning and can be effective at reducing gas and when used as a digestive. As well, hyssop is antiviral and can help to induce sweating during a fever.

Pinocamphone, alpha and beta-pinene, linalool, cineole, limonene, marrubiin, olanolic acid, ursolic acid, flavonoids, hyssopin glycosides, tannins, resin.


Hyssop has been mentioned in the bible as a holy herb used for cleansing holy places., and the Hebrew word for hyssop translates to “holy herb”. It has been historically used as protection from witches and the evil eye, as well as being planted on graves to protect the dead from the living.
