Brussels Sprouts With Za'atar And Schisandra

Brussels sprouts, za'atar spices, and schisandra berry? Oh yes!

This non-traditional side dish is the perfect choice if you are looking for a slightly bitter flavour to complement a meat or dairy rich main course.

You will need the following ingredients:

1lb brussels sprouts, cleaned and trimmed of their stems

1tsp honey (or more or less, to taste)

2/3 tsp schisandra berry powder

2 tsp melted butter

1 tbsp za'atar spice mix

Salt and pepper to taste

2/3 tsp lemon juice for garnish

Heat the oven to 350F. In a bowl toss all ingredients, excluding lemon juice, until the brussels sprouts are evenly coated.

Transfer to a baking sheet and roast for 30 minutes, or until you reach the desired level of crispiness. Garnish with lemon juice and serve.

Although you really only need to roast the brussels sprouts long enough for them to be cooked, most people (especially those not used to enjoying brussels sprouts) prefer when the leaves are very crispy, almost like chips. If you plan to make them this crispy the roasting time will be longer.

If you are unsure of where to purchase za'atar spice, check with your local middle eastern grocery store. Many places will either have it on the shelf or be able to order it for you.
