What Is Comfrey Root?

Comfrey root is an herbal remedy that is most commonly used as an ingredient in oils and salves intended for healing bruises, sprains, and muscle aches. Comfrey root works well on its own and when combined with other herbs, especially with slippery elm. Comfrey root is usually used topically, although some herbalists also recommend it for internal use.

How to Use Comfrey Root (Common Uses)

Taken internally as a tea, decoction, powder, capsules, or extract. Used externally as an infused oil, ointment, or poultice.

Medicinal Uses and Benefits of Comfrey Root

Comfrey root is extremely potent and can be beneficial as a cell proliferant. It is most often used as a topical ingredient in products for healing broken bones, sprains, swelling, muscle tears, and bruises. Comfrey root makes an excellent addition to infused oils and salves.

In addition, the astringent and mucilaginous qualities of comfrey root can be beneficial for healing wounds and boils.

Some caution is advised when using comfrey root for open wounds, as it may heal an open wound extremely quickly, and if there is an infection present the bacteria can become trapped under the skin.

There is research suggesting that certain compounds in comfrey root may be difficult for the liver to process when taken internally. This is not an issue when comfrey root is used externally.

Active Constituents in Comfrey Root
