Gentian Root Digestive Tonic Recipe (Alcohol-Free)

A Classic Blend of Digestive Herbs

Gentian root has a strong reputation as a classic bitter herb for stimulating and supporting the digestive system. In this alcohol-free tonic recipe, gentian is paired with other flavourful digestive allies: calamus, dandelion, orange peel, and cardamom. Blackstrap molasses and vegetable glycerin create an alcohol-free base for a gentle yet effective formula to support healthy digestion.

This tonic can be taken before meals to help prime the digestive system. It is especially useful for sluggish digestion.

Ingredients:

Preparation:

  1. Soak the herbs: Place the gentian root, calamus root, dandelion root, orange peel, and cardamom seeds in a large pot with the distilled water. Let the herbs soak for 15 hours in cool, unheated water. This will help to soften them and begin the extraction process.
  2. Simmer the herbs: After soaking, bring the mixture slowly to a boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer. Cover the pot with a lid and let it simmer for 30 minutes.
  3. Strain and reduce: Strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean pot. Return the liquid to the stove and simmer uncovered until the volume is reduced to about 1 litre.
  4. Add molasses and glycerin: Remove from heat and stir in the blackstrap molasses and vegetable glycerin. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
  5. Cool and store: Allow the tonic to cool completely before bottling. Store in clean glass bottles in a cool, dark place. Refrigeration will extend shelf life.

Dosage

Take 2 teaspoons or less about 1 hour before meals to support digestion. Start with a smaller amount if you're new to digestive bitters or very sensitive, and adjust dosage and frequency as needed.

Note: Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
