Sewing Pouch Toys with Valerian Root and Catnip

Just like people, cats have preferences when it comes to herbal toys. Some cats love catnip, some prefer valerian root, and others go wild for both. Sewing simple herbal pouch toys lets you customize playtime while using the aromatic herbs that your cat enjoys most.

Catnip vs. Valerian Root for Cats

Catnip contains a compound called nepetalactone, which triggers a euphoric response in many cats. Some will roll, rub, drool, or become playful, while others may simply relax. About 30–40% of cats, however, don’t respond to catnip at all.

Valerian root has a strong, musky aroma that humans find pungent and some cats find irresistible. Cats who ignore catnip may respond enthusiastically to valerian, often becoming energetic, playful, or deeply focused on the toy. Some cats even respond more intensely to valerian than to catnip.

Many cats also enjoy both herbs. We suggest making these toys with whichever your feline prefers: catnip, valerian, or both of them combined.

Materials Needed

  • Cotton or linen fabric (scraps work well)
  • Thread
  • Needle or sewing machine
  • Dried catnip, valerian root, or both
  • Scissors

How to Sew Herbal Cat Toy Pouches

  1. Cut the Fabric: Cut two matching fabric pieces in your desired shape. We suggest squares, rectangles, or circles if you’re a beginner sewer. If you’re more advanced, fish or mouse shapes are a fun choice.
  2. Sew the Edges: Place fabric pieces right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving a small opening for filling.
  3. Turn Right Side Out: Turn the pouch right side out and gently press the edges flat.
  4. Fill with Herbs: Add a small amount of dried catnip, valerian root, or both. Avoid overfilling your toy so that it stays soft and flexible.
  5. Close the Opening: Sew the opening closed securely, reinforcing stitches to prevent curious claws from opening the pouch.
