Healing Calendula Salve
Calendula (Calendula officinalis) flowers are anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. The most potent part of the flower is the resin, which is why we suggest making this salve with whole calendula flowers and not just calendula petals. Try this salve next time you need a topical remedy for healing minor skin irritations, rashes, itches, and dryness.
You can make this recipe at home with just a few ingredients: dried calendula flowers, jojoba oil, and beeswax.
Calendula Salve Recipe
Ingredients:
- 30g dried calendula flowers
- 500ml jojoba oil
- 60g beeswax (grated or pellets)
Instructions:
- Combine and Infuse: Place the calendula and jojoba oil into a stainless steel or oven-safe glass pot. Gently stir to ensure the calendula is fully covered in oil. Cover the pot and place it in the oven at 200°F for between 3 and 24 hours.
- Strain the Oil: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Strain the infused oil through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean bowl, pressing down to extract as much oil as possible.
- Add Beeswax: Pour the strained oil into a clean saucepan and add the beeswax. Gently heat over low heat until the wax is fully melted, stirring to combine.
- Pour and Cool: Carefully pour the finished salve into clean glass jars or tins. Let them cool completely at room temperature before sealing with lids.
Storage
For best results, store your calendula salve in a cool, dark place. For longer-term storage, you can keep it in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life.
