Simple and Nourishing Chickweed Salve Recipe
Chickweed (Stellaria media) is a cooling, soothing, and skin-nourishing herbal ally. This common "weed" acts as a gentle remedy for healing minor skin irritations, rashes, itches, and dry skin. One of the best way to make use of chickweed's benefits is by making an herbal salve.
Below is our simple, tried-and-true recipe that you can make at home with just dried chickweed, olive oil, and beeswax.
Chickweed Salve Recipe
Ingredients:
- 150g dried chickweed
- 500ml olive oil (preferably organic, cold pressed)
- 60g beeswax (grated or pellets)
Instructions:
- Combine and Infuse: Place the chickweed and olive oil into a stainless steel or oven-safe glass pot. Gently stir to ensure the chickweed is fully covered in oil. Cover the pot and place it in the oven at 200°F for about 3 hours.
- Strain the Oil: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Strain the infused oil through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean bowl, pressing down to extract as much oil as possible.
- Add Beeswax: Pour the strained oil into a clean saucepan and add the beeswax. Gently heat over low heat until the wax is fully melted, stirring to combine.
- Pour and Cool: Carefully pour the finished salve into clean glass jars or tins. Let them cool completely at room temperature before sealing with lids.
Storage
For best results, store your chickweed salve in a cool, dark place. For longer-term storage, you can keep it in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life.
How to Use Chickweed Salve
Apply a small amount of salve directly to the affected area as needed. This salve is safe for everyday use and gentle enough for sensitive skin.
